The idea for a Roman Civilization Chest comes from the ‘Archäologiekoffer’ which is provided by the Kantonsarchäologie of the Kanton Zuerich, Switzerland to the schools. We owe a debt of gratitude to Markus Graf who helped us with advice and support and donated some items as well. Many of our write ups are taken from the material provided in their ‘Koffer’.
Our Roman Civilization Chest comprises about 100 items, many of them originals, and is still growing. We are interested in your feedback to see what other items you would like to see included.
Some of these items are delicate and need to be handled with care, but they should be handled! The idea is for the students to hold in their hands items that have been used hundreds of years ago!
None of the items was exceedingly expensive, but some would be very hard to replace. Some are very small and could easily get lost.
Professor Newman will bring the museum to school classes or groups in New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts. She presents the items and directs the audience to handle the artifacts, remembering that regular people handled these same artifacts some 2000 years ago.
If you would like your class or group to experience Roman daily life through the traveling museum, please use the contact form to schedule a visit.
